HUD Grant Funds CNR for Urban Environment Work

The Center for Sustainable Resource Development, part of the College of Natural Resources, is working with two Oakland neighborhoods to help improve the environment in urban areas.

The center has received a three-year grant of more than $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for a pilot environmental watch program in two Oakland neighborhoods, Fruitvale and the Golden Gate section of San Pablo Avenue. The program will work with the neighborhoods on:

* Environmental restoration, including green space renewal, creek restoration or other open space enhancements.

* Education on energy conservation and home improvements.

* Community gardening, including maximizing potential of household gardens, fruit trees and composting.
