Back to Berkeley For Top Clinton Economist Tyson

Laura D'Andrea Tyson will return to Berkeley after four years as the top economic adviser to President Clinton, Robert Anderson, chair of the campus's Department of Economics, confirmed Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Anderson said Tyson plans to be back in January for the start of spring term. She will assume the Class of 1939 chair that is jointly in the Department of Economics and the Haas School of Business.

Tyson, who joined the Berkeley faculty in 1977, is a professor of both economics and business administration.

"We're delighted that she will be returning here after four years of outstanding service to the nation," Anderson said.

William Hasler, dean of the Haas School, said that Tyson "has always been a great teacher and, for the past four years, her classroom has included the Cabinet, the Congress and the American people.

"Her return to Berkeley is wonderful news for both students and faculty."

Anita Hill Offered Scholar Post

In other news, Anita Hill has been offered a position as a visiting scholar with the Institute for the Study of Social Change.

Professor Troy Duster said he has been negotiating with Hill for the past eight to 10 months and he is optimistic that she will accept the offer.

Hill, who recently announced her departure from the University of Oklahoma where she taught law for 10 years, became a national figure when she charged Clarence Thomas with sexual harassment during his confirmation hearing for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.
