Do good, beat Stanford, in ‘Points for Pints’ blood drive

16 January 2002 | Between now and April 1, members of the campus community can do a good deed, plus win points for Cal, in a blood drive competition sponsored by the American Red Cross.

Eighteen Division I universities, including Berkeley, are up for the championship title in the Red Cross’s “Points for Pints” campaign.

Major drives will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in East Pauley Ballroom, on the following dates (see the web site for additional times):

Stanford Challenge:
Jan. 23 and 24

Singles Drive:
Feb. 7 and 8

Mega Drive:
March 20 and 21

“We hope some friendly competition will motivate people,” says Alton Lee, who serves with fellow psychology major Sandy Tesch as Berkeley coordinator for the competition. Both students began volunteering with the Bay Area Red Cross Chapter in high school and recently went to Washington to train for this campaign.

Lee notes that it takes 400 pints of blood a day to keep 40 Bay Area hospitals in a three-day supply, so blood is always needed.

Appointments to donate blood are recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome. To schedule an appointment, go to www.beadonor.com, select “appointments,” register, then select “mobile blood drives” and enter “UCB” for the group code.
