British epidemiologist speaks on inequalities in health, health care

06 February 2002 | A distinguished epidemiologist and scholar of pubic health, Sir Michael Marmot will address inequalities in health in two Hitchcock Lectures on campus next week.

Marmot speaks Tuesday, Feb. 12 on “Life and Death on the Social Gradient,” and Wednesday, Feb. 13 on “Health Matters: There Is Such a Thing as Society.” Both lectures will begin at 4:10 p.m. in the International House auditorium, 2229 Piedmont Ave.

Knighted in 2000 for services to epidemiology and the understanding of health inequalities, Marmot currently heads a research program on social and cultural determinants of health and ill health in England. His research in progress includes a longitudinal study of British civil servants, an investigation of disease patterns among Britain’s immigrant population, and a study monitoring the nation’s cardiovascular health. He received his Ph.D. at Berkeley and has held teaching positions here in the past.

Past Hitchcock professors presenting the annual lectures include Linus Pauling, Robert Oppenheimer and Stephen Hawking.
