Henry Rapoport
Henry Rapoport, an outstanding scientist and popular chemistry teacher, died March 6 following a short illness. He was 83.

For several decades, Rapoport taught the required chemistry courses for premedical and other life science students. He also taught upper-division undergraduate and graduate-level courses in natural products chemistry.

Rapoport, who became a Berkeley chemistry instructor in 1946, was widely recognized for his work in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, especially for his work in the synthesis of drug compounds. He rose through the ranks to professor in 1957 and retired in 1989. In 1997, he was awarded the Berkeley Citation.

A memorial service will be held on campus on March 29. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Henry Rapoport Endowed Chair in Organic Chemistry at Berkeley or to Berkeley Hillel.
