April forums will address academic strategic plan

20 March 2002 | A series of forums to help guide the campus’s academic direction over the next two decades will be held during the month of April. Members of the campus community are invited to attend and share their ideas.

It has been almost two decades since the campus last formulated a comprehensive strategic plan. Several recent changes in the academic environment made it urgent that Berkeley develop a new strategic plan. The first is the mandate from the UC Office of the President that Berkeley add 4,000 students by the end of the decade. The second is a UC Regents’ requirement that Summer Sessions offerings be made to more closely resemble those being offered for fall and spring semesters.

These new requirements are an opportunity to develop new programs and expand offerings, but they also put stress on the space and infrastructure of a physically constrained campus. In fall 2000, a committee composed of administrators, faculty, staff and students was charged with considering how to accommodate these changes while preserving Berkeley’s quality and reputation. Its deliberations were later expanded to consider all aspects of the academic enterprise.

All three forums will be held in Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel Engineering Center.
