CED event celebrates local landscapes

10 April 2002 | The College of Environmental Design Alumni Association is offering guided “Sites and Insights” tours of distinctively designed Bay Area landscapes, from revered historic sites and gardens to contemporary corporate centers.

Open to environmental design professionals and the public, the six special tours on Sunday, April 28, feature sites that exemplify the exceptional range of the Bay Area’s rich landscape history and help give the region its identity and meaning.

At an all-day, follow-up symposium — set for Saturday, May 4, at the Pacific Film Archive Theater — participants can learn more about the sites’ original design inspiration and intention.

Sites on the tour schedule include the Blackberry Creek restoration project in North Berkeley, Chiron Corporation’s new biotechnology center and Pixar Animation’s new 215,000-square-foot headquarters, both in Emeryville; the Stanford campus, Crissy Field at the Presidio (the nation’s first urban national park), San Francisco’s Embarcadero; Mountain View Cemetery, the Kaiser Center Roof Garden and Lafayette Square, all in Oakland; and the Mountain Theater on Mt. Tamalpais; and the private Donnell Garden in Sonoma County.

Cost of the program is $75 for College of Environmental Design alumni and $100 others. Advance registration is required. For reservations, contact Sheila Dickie at 642-7722.
