Lawrence Berkeley National Lab plans helicopter fly-over
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory plans to update its record of lab site conditions with a routine, two-hour aerial photography session. The exact date is dependent on weather conditions.

During the photo session, a helicopter will hover over the laboratory to document site conditions. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will use the photographs to confirm that vegetation management controls to minimize fire risks are in place. The lab hopes also to be able to identify any vegetation damage, such as that inflicted on Eucalyptus groves by the long-horned borer.

New Riverside chancellor is first Latina to lead a UC campus
Frances Cordova, an astrophysicist and former vice chancellor at UC Santa Barbara, has been named chancellor of UC Riverside. The first female Hispanic to lead a UC campus, she begins her new job on July 1.

Riverside is one of the fastest-growing campuses in the UC system. It is also the most diverse of the system’s nine campuses. Hispanic students make up about one-fifth of the campus’s enrollment.

Cordova, Riverside’s seventh chancellor, replaces Raymond Orbach, who resigned this year to work for the U.S. Department of Energy.

At a news conference following her appointment, Cordova said her top priorities would be managing Riverside’s growth, raising private funds and “finding more ways to get more people prepared for higher education, especially underrepresented minorities.”

Symposium May 3-4 looks at the resilience of children
The Berkeley Center for the Development of Peace and Well-Being hosts its inaugural symposium, “Children Who Thrive in the Face of Adversity: Navigating the Rocky Road to Well-Being,” on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 at the Radisson Hotel, Berkeley Marina.

The symposium includes talks by four leading scholars on childhood resilience, small group sessions involving participation from the community, and readings by winners of the Lisa Capps Memorial Essay Contest.

Fulbright Scholar lecture, research grants available
The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering lecturing/research awards in some 140 countries for the 2003-‘04 academic year.
Traditional Fulbright awards are available from two months to an academic year, while a new short-term grants program — the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program — offers two-to-six-week grants in a variety of disciplines and fields.

Application deadlines are May 1 for Fulbright Distinguished Chair awards in Europe, Canada and Russia; Aug. 1 for Fulbright traditional lecturing and research grants worldwide; Nov. 1 for the summer German Studies Seminar and for spring/summer seminars in Germany, Korea and Japan for academic and international education administrators. The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program has a rolling deadline.
