05 June 2002 | In a new web feature debuting shortly, Public Affairs will showcase a handful of Berkeley students who are spending the summer doing academic and service projects in the field. Seven students from four projects will share — in their own words and photos — the challenges and successes they encounter as the weeks go by.

They include law student Tim Griffiths, doing human rights work in the Dominican Republic with people of Haitian descent; doctoral student Zach Peery, studying the endangered marbled murrelet from a field station near Año Nuevo; classics major Kath-erine Chou, reporting from Ancient Nemea, Greece, where the campus has long been excavating a Panhellenic athletic site; and four Haas business students — Fabio Matsui, Brent Mitchell, Doug Brown and Joost-Johan Krikhaar — who are helping a Mexican orphanage develop its goat cheese and soap business.
