Beals

25 September 2002 | Activist Melba Pattillo Beals spoke Sept. 10 in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union Building at an event titled “Women as Activists: Past, Present and Future.” Beals was one of the “Little Rock Nine” — black students who, in 1957, integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling striking down “separate but equal” facilities for blacks and whites.
The reception marked the opening of a multimedia exhibit on the life of Mary Baker Eddy, pictured on the right,
the 19th-century author and activist who founded the Church of Christ, Scientist. The traveling exhibit is sponsored on campus by the women’s studies department. It will remain on display in the East Pauley Ballroom through Oct. 10.
