Two women who went before

Activist Melba Pattillo Beals spoke Sept. 10 in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union Building at an event titled “Women as Activists: Past, Present and Future.” Beals was one of the “Little Rock Nine” — black students who, in 1957, integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling striking down “separate but equal” facilities for blacks and whites.
