Updated list of recently deceased is available online

Maps, books — for a song — at all-day campus sale, Oct. 5
Approximately 10,000 maps and books will go on sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, in Pauley Ballroom, Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union Building.

Nautical charts, aerial photos, hanging classroom maps, topographical maps, and navigation charts, some dating back to the 19th century, will be among the items available. Most maps will cost $2; from 3 to 5 p.m., they will be offered at half-price.

About 2,500 books on scholarly subjects will also be for sale, at $1 to $100 each.For information, call 642-3318 or 642-4368.

Israeli, Palestinian scholars to discuss prospects for peace
Why has the hope for peace in the Middle East given way to the current cycle of violence in Israel and Palestine? What forces have pulled the two sides apart, and how might the forces of reconciliation prevail?

Two scholars — one Israeli and the other Palestinian — will address these issues Friday, Oct. 4, at the Townsend Center for the Humanities, as part of a national speaking tour. The speakers are Oren Yiftachel, professor of geography at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and Rema Mammami, professor of gender studies at Birzeit University on the West Bank.

Scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m., the event is co-sponsored by the campus’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies and by Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace, an international network of scholars working for a just peace in Israel and Palestine. For information, call 642-8208.

Volunteer for Oct. 5 day of service to local nonprofits

Speak your mind at campus forum on workplace culture
“What I Need to Feel Supported at Work,” a facilitated forum for staff to discuss workplace culture issues, will be held from 12:10 to 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel Engineering Center.

The event will be facilitated by representatives from Staff Equity and Diversity Services and the Berkeley Staff Assembly.

UC to mitigate Claremont Canyon fire hazard
The university is currently clearing eucalyptus trees in a particularly fire-prone grove at the top of Claremont Canyon. The area — nearly four acres of campus property along the west side of Grizzly Peak Blvd. in Oakland — can act in a fire as a natural funnel, directing hot easterly Diablo winds westward and down through the dense chaparral of Claremont Canyon. Less fire-prone 30-year-old redwoods and bays, scattered within the grove, will not be removed.

A photo caption in last week’s Calendar mistakenly identified San Francisco Symphony concertmaster Alexander Baranschik as pianist Peter Grunberg. Both performed in a presentation of Messiaen’s “Songs of Earth and Heaven” in Zellerbach Hall on Sunday.
