For the record
A headline in last week’s Berkeleyan incorrectly described the effect of an increase in the student population this fall. The campus has not in fact exceeded the limits of an enrollment agreement with the city of Berkeley.

As the story correctly noted, while there are more students enrolled this fall than expected, a campus committee is looking at strategies to keep the overall student headcount within agreed-upon limits. Under the agreement, the campus reports its enrollment in the spring semester based on a two-semester average head-count, excluding students who are studying off campus. We regret the error.

UC declares formal impasse in talks with clerical union
The University of California met last week with the Coalition of University Employees (CUE), the union representing UC clerical employees, with the goal of concluding contract talks. Due to remaining significant differences, however, the university has declared an impasse.

While informing the union that it did not believe further movement could be achieved through normal bargaining, the university reiterated its commitment to reaching an agreement with CUE. To realize that goal, UC is sending a formal “declaration of impasse” to the state Public Employ-ment Relations Board and will await its confirmation ruling. The university invited CUE to join in a mutual declaration of impasse. If the impasse is confirmed, the board will appoint a state mediator to try to facilitate an agreement. Failing that, a state-appointed neutral labor expert chairs a panel that reviews the matter and recommends a non-binding solution.

Valet parking at the Nov. 23 Big Game — for bikes
Free valet parking will be available for those riding bikes to the Big Game on Saturday, Nov. 23. The parking area, located on the southwest corner of Maxwell Field (formerly Kleeberger Field), will open two hours before the game and will remain open for one hour after the game. The lot is secure and will be monitored by attendants throughout the event. The valet-parking service is sponsored by Parking and Transportation, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, and the Bicycle Friendly Berkeley Coalition. For information, call 643-9276.

Reading, panel on bipolar disorder feature Berkeley prof
On Thursday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 8:30 p.m, Professor Stephen Hinshaw will read from his new book, “The Years of Silence Are Past: My Father’s Life with Bipolar Disorder.”

A Berkeley professor of psychology, Hinshaw will be joined by Professor Jodi Halpern of the School of Public Health and Sascha DeBrul, a writer and advocate with personal experience of bipolar disorder, for a panel discussion.

The free event is open to the public. It will be held in the Angel/Belvedere Room of the Radisson Berkeley Marina Hotel. The event is sponsored by the Berkeley Center for the Development of Peace and Well-Being. To RSVP, email ecpayne@uclink. berkeley.edu.

Dec. 5 Lunch Poems features poet Mary Ruefle
Massachusetts poet Mary Ruefle will give her first California reading as Lunch Poems’ featured reader on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Ruefle has been making a national reputation with her seven books of poetry, known especially for their frisky sense of humor. The reading takes place at 12:10 p.m. in Doe Library’s Morrison Room.
