Nominations sought for service-learning award
Berkeley’s Service-Learning Research and Development Center is now accepting nominations for the 2003 Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service Learning. The national $2,000 award honors faculty members for integrating service into their curriculum and promoting service learning within their university.

The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 3. Nominations should be sent to Service-Learning Research and Development Center, 615 University Hall, MC 1040. For information on nomination criteria, e-mail Jane Po at janepo@uclink.berkeley.edu, or call 643-0513.

Campus car-sharing program launches
In an effort to reduce parking and traffic demands, and improve the environment, Berkeley’s Parking and Transportation office is introducing a car-sharing program for university students and employees.

The program will start with two vehicles — new green Volkswagen Beetles — and grow as demand warrants. One of the Beetles will be displayed on Sproul Plaza during a kick-off event between 10 a.m and 2 p.m on Wednesday, Feb. 5. There, the campus community can inspect the car and learn how to participate.

Parking and Transportation is partnering with City CarShare, a local, non-profit organization, to launch the program. Visit www.berkeley.edu/transportation or call 352-0323 for information.

‘Tree of Life’ public lectures on Feb. 1
Recent advances in evolutionary biology have allowed scientists to investigate the origin and diversity of all life on earth. A flood of new information from DNA sequencing technology is transforming biology. The Tree of Life Project is a collaborative effort among biologists to assemble a genealogical map for all 1.7 million described species.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Berkeley Natural History Museums present “Understanding the Tree of Life,” a day of talks by expert speakers Carrine Blank, Brent Mishler, John Taylor, David Lindberg, Jeff Boore, and Kip Will.

Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Valley Life Sciences Building. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $20 for members of any one of the campus’s six natural-history museums, $25 for non-members, free for students.

For registration or information, call 643-7008, or visit bnhm.berkeley.museum/tol.
