Around Cal

  Homecoming
Members of the classes of '71 and '72 took part in a convocation ceremony. Many were not able to participate in their original ceremonies due to the Vietnam War.

Homecoming Highlights

More than 1,000 alumni and their families attended Cal Homecoming and Reunion Weekend on Sept. 19-20. The event featured nearly 100 activities to stimulate the brain, rekindle friendships, and ignite the Golden Bear spirit.

Alumni from the classes of '62, '67, '71, '72, '77, '82, and '87 flooded the campus Sept. 19 for reunion celebrations, while the class of 1992 gathered at Schroeder's in San Francisco.

Chancellor Berdahl joined in the fun and was presented with class gift checks totaling over $1.2 million. The class gifts were raised specifically to celebrate each class's anniversary.

The chancellor also received symbolic checks totaling $5,640,760, representing the total amount given by members of each class toward any campus program.

In his keynote address, Berdahl encouraged alumni to reflect upon what a Berkeley education has meant for them. He likened Berkeley to a family and urged the audience to create with the University new traditions of family.

One tradition that remains strong today is enthusiasm for Cal football. Bear fans convened Sept. 20 at Kleeberger Field for the Fun Zone, a pre-game extravaganza with food and entertainment for all ages.

Organizers have begun planning for next fall's Cal Homecoming and Reunion Weekend '98. Reunioning classes will include '43, '48, '53, '58, '63, '68, '73, '78, '83, '88, and '93.
