In the drafty, cavernous basement of the
University of California at Berkeley's Phoebe Apperson Hearst Museum of
Anthropology, graduate student researcher Alejandro de Avila examines a
pair of 19th century Mexican trousers. The desk he huddles over is small,
the lighting dim, and hanging just above him are two Alaskan kayaks from
the late 1800s. |
