Mary Lou Norrie Brown, 71, former chair of the Department of Physical Education, who specialized in motor learning and mentored graduate students, died Dec. 11, 1998.

Dorothy Bird Nyswander, 104, one of three founders of the School of Public Health and a world leader in public health education, died Dec. 18, 1998.

Harmer E. Davis, 93, professor emeritus of civil engineering and founder of what is now the University of California Institute of Transportation Studies, died Dec. 24, 1998.

Maxwell A. Rosenlicht, 74, distinguished mathematician and professor emeritus of mathematics, died Jan. 22.

Jim Lemmon, 79, former administrator and crew coach who led Cal crews to three national titles during the early 1960s, died Jan. 25.

John Lysmer, 67, professor emeritus of geotechnical engineering and one of the developers of the computational underpinnings of modern geotechnical earthquake engineering, died Jan. 25.

Albert Pickerell, 86, professor emeritus of journalism and a specialist in media law, died Feb. 13.

Stefan Riesenfeld, 90, professor emeritus of law and a globally recognized legal scholar and adviser, died Feb. 17.

Alan Bearden, 67, professor emeritus of neurobiology and biophysics whose research addressed X-ray spectroscopy, protein structure and function, and photosynthesis, died Feb. 17.

David Daube, 90, professor emeritus of law and a world-renowned Biblical law scholar, died Feb. 24.

Glenn T. Seaborg, 86, revered chemist, Nobel laureate and former Berkeley chancellor, died Feb. 25.

John P. Carter, 84, professor emeritus at the Haas School of Business who specialized in finance and transportation management, died March 3.
