MEDIA ADVISORY: Future of social work and social services for children

WHAT: A three-day symposium at the University of California, Berkeley, on the future of social work and social services for children. It will be held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the California Social Work Education Center (CalSWEC), a consortium of educators, administrators and practitioners from throughout the state.  
WHEN: Friday, May 19, 4-6 p.m.
Saturday, May 20, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Sunday, May 21, 9-11:30 a.m.
 
WHERE: Waterfront Plaza Hotel, Jack London Square, Oakland.  
WHO:

Speakers and panelists include:

* Rita Saenz, director of the California Department of Social Services. She will speak Friday at 4:30 p.m.

* Del Sayles-Owen, head of the Children's Services Branch of the state Department of Social Services. She will speak Saturday at 10.45 a.m.

* A dozen county welfare directors.

* Deans of 12 of California's 14 graduate schools of social work.

 
BACKGROUND: This symposium will occur in the midst of California's tax windfall, which will augment funds available for foster care, adoption and other child welfare programs by $99.9 million in the coming year. Now 10 years old, CalSWEC has trained more than 1,000 students earning master's degrees in social work to bring new energy and ideas to the field of child welfare. The consortium, initiated by UC Berkeley's School of Social Welfare to encourage professionalism and innovation, gives students a healthy yearly stipend in return for their service in child welfare programs.

Friday, May 19, 4-6 p.m
Speakers include James Midgley, dean of the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare; Yolanda Rinaldo, president of the CalSWEC board of directors; Rita Saenz, director of the California Department of Social Services; and Sherrill J. Clark, executive director of CalSWEC.

Saturday, May 20, 8:30-9 a.m.
9:15 - 10:30 a.m.
Panel discussion-CalSWEC: A Retrospective. Panelists will examine the roots of this remarkable 10-year collaboration.

The moderator is Sherrill J. Clark of CalSWEC. Speakers include Bart Grossman, former executive director of CalSWEC; Anita Harbert, director of San Diego State University School of Social Work; Richard O'Neil, former director of Santa Clara County Social Services Agency; and Joseph Nunn, co-project coordinator of the Title IV-E MSW Program and vice-chair of the Department of Social Welfare, UCLA School of Public Policy and Social Research.

10:45 - 12 noon
Panel discussion-The Future of Social Work and the Publicly Supported Social Services. This panel is about revisioning social work practice and education in light of challenges in areas such as workforce development, new partnerships, and training for integrated services

The panel moderator is Sherrill J. Clark of CalSWEC. Speakers include Ellen Dunbar, director of the Master of Social Work program at California State University, Stanislaus: Jeff Jue, president of the County Welfare Directors Association; and Del Sayles-Owen, chief of the Children's Services Branch, California Department of Social Services.

1:45 - 3:15 p.m.
Panel discussion-Curriculum Development. Panelists will discuss what lies ahead for curriculum development and reform in the 21st century, as well assess past achievements.

The moderator is Janlee Wong, executive director of the National Association of Social Workers. Speakers include Sherrill J. Clark of CalSWEC; Shaaron Gilson, project coordinator of the Title IV-E MSW Program at the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare; and Marilyn Flynn, dean of the University of San Francisco School of Social Work.

3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Presentations of CalSWEC-funded research projects The introduction will be made by Teresa Morris, chair of the Department of Social Work at California State University, San Bernardino.

Sunday, May 21, 9-9: 30 a.m.
9:30 - 11 a.m.
Informal Discussion-Long-Term Strategic Planning

Discussion leaders include Beverly Buckles, dean of the Loma Linda University School of Social Work; Teresa Morris of California State University, San Bernardino; and Sherrill J. Clark of CalSWEC.
