WHAT:

A lecture by U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers about "Keeping the Economy Growing" at the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business. Summers, on his first visit to the campus as treasury secretary, will focus on policies he contends will maintain the economic growth of the last decade.

 
WHEN: 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000.  
WHERE: UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, Arthur Andersen Auditorium. The Haas School is located on Gayley Road between Hearst Avenue and Bancroft Way.  
WHO: Summers has served as secretary since July 1999 and previously was deputy secretary of the treasury under Robert E. Rubin. Summers played a leading role in the department's work on issues related to international economic and financial policy, tax policy, the nation's financial system, domestic policy and enforcement. He holds a BS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD from Harvard University.  

BACKGROUND: The Haas Annual Business Faculty Research Dialogue is a year-long discussion at UC Berkeley among the business, faculty and student communities. The series is sponsored by the Clausen Center for International Business and Policy and California Management Review and was launched in 1998 by Laura D'Andrea Tyson, dean of the Haas School. Summers will be introduced by Janet Yellen, the Eugene E. and Catherine M. Trefethen Professor of Business Administration. Yellen also was the chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisors from 1997 to 1999.
