Windha, a leading musician in Bali, will be joined for

Southeast Asia Studies, is in residence on campus this
fall with a local performing ensemble, Gamelan Sekar Jaya.

|
BACKGROUND:
The
inaugural ceremony concludes a course on the music of
Southeast Asia taught by lecturer Lisa Gold, whose students
have received instruction by Windha on the seven-pitch
scale Balinese gamelan as well as on the Javanese gamelan.
Although UC Berkeley's music department already owns
a Javanese gamelan, the Balinese gamelan differs dramatically
in sound, appearance, playing technique, repertoire
and performance contexts. It was brought to UC Berkeley
last summer by Gold and Ben Brinner, an ethnomusicologist
at UC Berkeley. Gold is a member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya.
The new gamelan was purchased for the music department
by the Center for Southeast Asia Studies with Luce Foundation
funds.
