WHAT:
A keynote speech by Nobel Laureate Daniel McFadden, an economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, at the campus's Charter Day festivities. McFadden won the Nobel Prize in economics last October and became the campus's 17th Nobel Prize winner.

McFadden will comment on many interesting topics - why he decided to donate his Nobel Prize winnings to charity; affirmative action; California's electricity crisis; the state of the economy; the feasibility of zero-emission vehicles; his positive experiences growing up in the public school system; and his life thus far as a Nobel Laureate.

This Charter Day event marks the 133rd birthday of the campus and celebrates UC Berkeley's Nobel Prize-winning tradition. Opening remarks will be by Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl.

Friday, March 23, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Zellerbach Auditorium, UC Berkeley.

WHO:
In addition to McFadden, other honored guests at the Charter Day ceremony will include UC Berkeley alumnus Zivorad I. Kovacevic, president of the European Movement in Serbia, who formerly was Yugoslavia's ambassador to the United States and mayor of Belgrade; and Amy Lemley, a UC Berkeley alumna who is executive director of First Place Fund for Youth, a successful non-profit organization that helps foster youth transition from foster care to independence and adulthood.

Kovacevic will receive the Elise and Walter A. Haas International Award for his dedication to public resistance against the Milosevic regime, for helping to protect the environment and for improving relations among neighboring countries in the Mediterranean and Europe.

Lemley will be presented with the Peter E. Haas Public Service Award, given each year to an alumnus or alumna of UC Berkeley who, through his or her own efforts, made a significant public contribution within the United States.

VISUALS: In addition to the ceremony, there will be a campus birthday party held at noon on Dwinelle Plaza with cupcakes, a Cal Trivia contest and music by the Straw Hat Band.
