WHAT:
"Reading Technologies," a talk about the history, visual architecture and meaning of reading from the time of classical print cultures and the medieval monk to the innovation and detachment of today's digital era.

WHEN:
4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2001.

WHERE:
The Morrison Reading Room, Doe Library, UC Berkeley. Illich will answer questions after his presentation and a reception will follow.

WHO:
Ivan Illich, a visiting scholar at University of California, Berkeley's anthropology department, an internationally known social scholar and author of books such as "In the Vineyard of the Text," "Gender" and "The Deschooling of Society."

BACKGROUND:
For nearly two decades, Illich has tapped the resources of the UC Berkeley library for research on his numerous books and papers about violence, charity and the church, sexual power, re-examining education and learning, the technological culture and economics.
