MEDIA ADVISORY: Lunch Poems kicks-off fifth year

WHAT:
The kick-off of the 5th year of "Lunch Poems," a University of California, Berkeley program that's become California's most popular poetry reading series. Select faculty members, staff members, and students will read their favorite poems during the event, which is free and open to the public.

 
 

WHEN:
The readings begin at 12:10 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6.

 
 

WHERE:
The Morrison Library in Doe Library, UC Berkeley.

 
 

WHO:
The Sept. 6 poetry readers will include:
* Olympic Gold Medal swimmer and student Staciana Stitts
* Chemistry professor Alex Pines
* Charles Faulhaber, director of The Bancroft Library, professor of Spanish
* Tim Duane, associate professor of landscape architecture
* Adán Tejada, lieutenant with the UC Berkeley Police Department
* Industrial engineering associate professor Kenneth Goldberg
* Hamida Chopra, South and Southeast Asian Studies lecturer, instructor and renowned reciter of Urdu poetry
* Jabari Mahiri, assistant professor of education
* Lisa Alvarez-Cohen, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering
* Library trustee Rocky Main
* Billy Curtis, coordinator of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Services

Subsequent monthly readings will include poet and MacArthur "Genius" Fellow Ishmael Reed, Sandra Cisneros, Pulitzer Prize-winner Gary Snyder, Chana Bloch - one of the foremost translators of Hebrew poetry - and prize-winning student poets. The Cisneros reading on Nov. 1 and the Synder reading on Dec. 6 will take place in the Zellerbach Playhouse to accommodate more listeners.
