WHAT:
"Raising the Bar: Latino and Latina Presence in the Judiciary and the Struggle for Representation," an unprecedented gathering of Latino judges from across the country to celebrate and critically examine the contributions of Latinos on the bench.

These judges, along with academics, practicing attorneys and law students, will gather at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall) this weekend, on this, the 40th anniversary of the appointment of the first Latino to the federal bench.

The conference, organized by Boalt Hall students, will begin Friday evening (Oct. 26) with a reception honoring Latino pioneers on the bench including Carlos Moreno, the newly appointed California Supreme Court justice and only the third Latino to receive such an appointment.

WHO:
Roughly two dozen panelists, including Cruz Reynoso, the first Latino appointed to the California Supreme Court; Maria Echaveste, former White House deputy chief of staff for the Clinton administration; and Judge Richard Paez, 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
