On his death, the Austin American-Statesman wrote: "Matthew Lyon's
words helped shape Texas politics during the 1980s. Though he was just
out of college, his writing skills landed him jobs with the state's most
influential leaders." Lyon served as chief speechwriter and
deputy press secretary to then-Texas governor Mark W. White (who is seated
at left). Lyon is seated at right.
