WHAT:
An open house about plans for new University of California, Berkeley student housing in the Southside neighborhood near campus that will provide 1,200 beds by 2005. Plans also call for new dining commons, recreational facilities, a café, parking and improved student services.

BACKGROUND:
The following projects will be showcased:

College-Durant student housing at the southeast corner of College and Durant will provide apartment-style housing for 120 students when it opens for the Fall 2002 semester.

Central Dining and Office Facility, on the east side of Bowditch between Haste and Channing, a four-story building that will provide a modernized central location for student food services, along with a neighborhood cafe and administrative offices for campus residential and student service programs.

Channing Bowditch student housing, fronts onto Channing Way just west of Bowditch Street, and is designed as a three- and four-story wood frame building to house 222 students in double-occupancy bedrooms.

Units 1 and 2 additional student housing will provide 890 beds in four buildings on the same blocks at Residence Halls 1 and 2. Apartment-style housing will be built at Unit 2, along with a new residence hall. Unit 1 will get two new dorms. The residence halls will have double- and triple-occupancy rooms with shared baths. The apartment building will have double- and triple-shared bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchen and living/dining room.
