WHAT: In late 1999, International and Area Studies announced that it would honor Dellums' years of service and commitment to peace and human rights issues by establishing a professorship and annual lecture in his name. Dellums, who was first elected to Congress in 1970 and served until 1998, obtained a master's degree in social work from UC Berkeley. Lee, who was elected to fill Dellums' seat in 1998, also received a master's degree in social work from UC Berkeley. Lee was selected to deliver the first Dellums lecture based on her commitment to peace and justice.
