WHAT: "The Enron Debacle: What Happened and What's Next?" a seminar exploring the complex issues surrounding the demise of Enron, its implications for the accounting profession, and its widespread implications for the stock market and its supporting institutions. The event is organized by the Center for Financial Reporting & Management at the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business.A panel of academics and practitioners will sort through the maze of off-balance sheet items and special purpose entities to explain clearly the accounting issues at Enron and their implications for investors. The impact on the accounting profession, security analysts, and the structure of pension plans will also be discussed.

WHO: Keynote speaker Bala Dharan, J. Howard Creekmore Professor of Management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University, has researched the issues surrounding the Enron collapse and recently shared his findings with a congressional committee.Moderator Brett Trueman, Donald H. Seiler Professor of Public Accounting and chair of the Accounting Department at the Haas School of Business, also is the faculty director of the Center for Financial Reporting & Management.

BACKGROUND: The Center for Financial Reporting & Management seeks to further the interaction between the accounting profession and faculty in accounting.
