WHAT:
The first Patricia Kualapai Memorial Lecture on Violence Against Women. The new lecture series is in honor of the late Kualapai, a 34-year-old University of California, Berkeley, sociology student. She was shot to death a year ago at her Alameda home.

Kaulapai's two children were presented with her diploma in graduation ceremonies last spring. Her ex-husband is charged with her slaying and has yet to stand trial.

WHO:
Beth Richie, associate professor of criminal justice and women's studies at the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, will talk about "Violence Against Women: Reflections from 20 Years of Anti-racist and Social Justice Activism."

Richie is the recipient of the National Advocacy Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Violence Prevention, the Audre Lorde Legacy Award of the Union Institute for her work with the National Network for Women in Prison, and the Visionary Award of the Violence Intervention Project. She is the author of "Compelled to Crime: The Gender Entrapment of Black Battered Women."

The sponsors of this lecture program, which aims to deepen the understanding of violence against women and the history of activism against such violence, include the UC Berkeley Department of Sociology, Department of Women's Studies and the Beatrice Bain Research Group.
