WHAT: "The 2002 University of California Systemwide Biomedical Engineering Symposium," a two-day conference highlighting emerging research in such fields as biomedical imaging, tissue engineering, nanotechnology and BioMEMS. Graduate students and new faculty members from the nine UC campuses will share their research in seminars, panel discussions and poster sessions at the symposium, hosted this year by the Department of Bioengineering at UC Berkeley. Topics of plenary sessions include molecular motors, stem cell research and computational genomics.

BACKGROUND: The research symposium, now in its third year, promotes the interaction of the bioengineering faculty and graduate students throughout the UC campuses. The event also includes an industry/academic job fair at 6 p.m. on Sunday, with representatives from Agilent Technologies, Bayer and NASA Ames, among others. Sponsors of the symposium include the Institute for Bioengineering, Biotechnology and Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3); the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS); The Whitaker Foundation and industry donors.
