UC Berkeley taps Georgetown administrative leader as associate vice chancellor
21 May 2002

By José L. Rodríguez, University Relations

Berkeley - Following a nationwide search, the chief development officer at Georgetown University was named today (Tuesday, May 21) as associate vice chancellor for university relations for the University of California, Berkeley.

Scott Biddy, 38, will take the leadership of UC Berkeley's fundraising operations, which last year celebrated a capital campaign that amassed $1.44 billion - the most ever by a public university at the time and the largest raised by any university without a medical school. He begins his new post August 5.

Biddy will be responsible for managing diverse areas of the university's development enterprise, including all aspects of fundraising, corporate and foundation relations, communications, operations, and events. He will also serve as vice president of the UC Berkeley Foundation, the university's primary vehicle for enlisting fundraising volunteers from the private sector.

"Scott Biddy is committed to the principle that the best fundraising practices support and extend the academic core of the university," said UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor for University Relations Donald A. McQuade. "Our faculty and students will benefit most from the leadership that Scott will bring to the UC Berkeley campus."

Biddy will partner with Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl and McQuade, as well as with faculty, deans, campus staff, and volunteers to support fundraising for UC Berkeley's academic agenda.

At Georgetown, Biddy has served as associate vice president for university development, and he has overseen the school's $1 billion "Third Century Campaign."

"The opportunity to serve an institution of such intellectual rigor and rich diversity is so compelling for me," said Biddy. "I look forward to our work of furthering the institution's noble mission through securing the support of those who value that mission."

Prior to Georgetown, Biddy built a career in development and alumni relations at his alma mater, Rice University, culminating as interim vice president for university advancement. At Rice, he also served as associate vice president for development/alumni and as executive director of the Association of Rice Alumni.

Biddy joined higher education after six years in banking, ending as vice president for regulatory affairs at MNC Financial Inc. of Baltimore, Md.

He earned his bachelor of arts in English and managerial studies from Rice in 1986.
