Van Sluyters is being honored for his stewardship of organizations that support and defend biomedical research at both the state and national levels, his recognition of the importance of and support for science education within California, and his tireless leadership of the California Biomedical Research Association over the past years.

Each year the California Society for Biomedical Research recognizes an individual who has contributed significant support to the field of biomedical research in California and displayed support for education and public outreach on science and biomedical issues, thereby actively participating in furthering medical advancements. This year's award will be presented at a black tie gala dinner to be held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on June 5.

Past recipients of this leadership award include Senator Dianne Feinstein for her support for increasing federal research funding and California's science and technology industry, and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi for her significant role in increasing the National Institutes of Health's research budget.

Van Sluyters has served on the Council of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of the National Academy of Sciences, and is a current member of the Council on Accreditation of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Research, International (AAALAC). He has been invited to present expert testimony before the California State Assembly and the U.S. House of Representatives on topics of biomedical research. At U.C. Berkeley, he has served as chair of the Faculty of the School of Optometry and as faculty assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Research. He is a member of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute and is chair of the Animal Care and Use Committee.

Van Sluyters has been a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Biomedical Research, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Americans for Medical Progress and in his third year as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the California Biomedical Research Association.

The California Biomedical Research Association is the companion organization of the California Society for Biomedical Research. They are based in Sacramento and are non-profit membership and education organizations that advocate for continued advancement of human and animal health through biomedical research, teaching, and testing; promote public understanding, education, and support of biomedical research; and participate in legislation at the local and state levels.
