C. Van Sluyters to Receive Biomedical Research Leadership

Richard
C. Van Sluyters, Professor of Optometry at U.C. Berkeley,
has been named the 2002 recipient of the Biomedical Research
Leadership Award from the California Society for Biomedical
Research.

Van
Sluyters is being honored for his stewardship of organizations
that support and defend biomedical research at both the
state and national levels, his recognition of the importance
of and support for science education within California,
and his tireless leadership of the California Biomedical
Research Association over the past years.
Each
year the California Society for Biomedical Research recognizes
an individual who has contributed significant support
to the field of biomedical research in California and
displayed support for education and public outreach on
science and biomedical issues, thereby actively participating
in furthering medical advancements. This year's award
will be presented at a black tie gala dinner to be held
at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles
on June 5.
Past
recipients of this leadership award include Senator Dianne
Feinstein for her support for increasing federal research
funding and California's science and technology industry,
and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi for her significant role
in increasing the National Institutes of Health's research
budget.
Van
Sluyters has served on the Council of the Institute for
Laboratory Animal Research of the National Academy of
Sciences, and is a current member of the Council on Accreditation
of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of
Laboratory Animal Research, International (AAALAC). He
has been invited to present expert testimony before the
California State Assembly and the U.S. House of Representatives
on topics of biomedical research. At U.C. Berkeley, he
has served as chair of the Faculty of the School of Optometry
and as faculty assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Research.
He is a member of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute
and is chair of the Animal Care and Use Committee.
Van
Sluyters has been a member of the Board of Directors of
the National Association for Biomedical Research, and
is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Americans
for Medical Progress and in his third year as the Chair
of the Board of Directors of the California Biomedical
Research Association.
The
California Biomedical Research Association is the companion
organization of the California Society for Biomedical
Research. They are based in Sacramento and are non-profit
membership and education organizations that advocate for
continued advancement of human and animal health through
biomedical research, teaching, and testing; promote public
understanding, education, and support of biomedical research;
and participate in legislation at the local and state
levels.
