The following is a statement from University of California,
Berkeley, Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl regarding the death
of Marla Bennett, a UC Berkeley graduate. She was one of
seven people - five Americans and two Israelis - killed
Wednesday, July 31, when a bomb exploded in a crowded cafeteria
at Jerusalem's Hebrew University.
"I wish to express my profound sadness at the loss of a member of the University of California, Berkeley, community. Marla Bennett graduated from UC Berkeley in May 2000 with a bachelor's degree in political science, and during her four years here was extremely active in Hillel, the Jewish cultural center near campus.
"The fact that a member of the UC Berkeley community is among the latest victims of the continuing violence in the Middle East has left us all the more shocked and grief-stricken.
"To Marla's family in San Diego, and to her friends here and abroad, I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy. Please know that the thoughts and prayers of the entire campus community are with all of you."
