Welcome
Week, a five-day-long event held the week before classes
start at the University of California, Berkeley, is about
to begin. From Aug. 19 -23, students will attend orientation
sessions, meet Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl at new student
receptions, take tours and join clubs and organizations.
For most students, classroom instruction begins Monday,
Aug. 26.
On Sunday, Aug. 18, Opening Day, students will move
into their residence halls and meet housing and dining
staff members. Their parents may attend orientation
sessions. (Members of the media must go to check-in
tables at the residence halls for authorization to enter
the buildings).
Welcome Week activities include:
* New Student Convocation, 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19.
This official campus welcoming ceremony for all incoming
freshmen, transfer and extension students will be held
on Memorial Glade, next to Doe Library.
* Chancellor's receptions for new undergraduates, 4-5:30
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20; 4:30-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23;
and 4:30-6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26. New students get the
chance to meet the chancellor at one of three residence

School and college orientations, many on Wednesday,
Aug. 21. Colleges, majors and student groups hold orientations
for new students as the school year begins. For a complete

* Calapalooza 2002 Activity Fair for New Undergraduates,
11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22. Representatives from
dozens of campus clubs and organizations will distribute
information to new students and answer their questions
at two fair locations - Memorial Glade and the Campanile
Esplanade.
