WHAT: "After the Bubbles: Linking the Recoveries of America and Asia," a discussion by experts in Japanese and Asian finance and an authority on international economics from the University of California, Berkeley. Topics will include possible dangers to Asia of the U.S. technology slowdown, the impacts of financial deregulation, a liquidity shortage and deflation, and who or what may drive a trans-Pacific recovery.Co-sponsors are the Japan Society of Northern California, UC Berkeley's Institute of East Asian Studies, and the Commonwealth Club of California.

WHO: Leading the discussion will be: * Shijuro Ogata, a senior adviser to Yamaichi Securities, who worked for more than 30 years with the Bank of Japan. From 1986-1991, he was the Japan Development Bank's deputy governor. He is deputy chair of The Trilateral Commission and is returning from recent World Bank meetings in Washington, D.C. * Barry Eichengreen, professor of economics and political science at UC Berkeley, and director of the campus's Institute for European Studies. From 1997-98 he was senior policy adviser at the International Monetary Fund. He has published widely on the international monetary and financial system. * Chantale Wong, former U.S. acting executive director of the Asian Development Bank, who represented the United States in talks with member countries on approaches to development assistance. * T.J. Pempel, director of UC Berkeley's Institute of East Asian Studies and professor of political science. He will moderate.
