MEDIA ADVISORY: Campus memorial service for former Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien

WHAT:
A campus memorial service for Chang-Lin Tien, former chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, who died Oct. 29 at age 67. Tien, the campus's seventh chancellor and an esteemed professor of mechanical engineering, was a member of the faculty for 42 years. He was the first Asian American to head a major research university in the United States.

 
 

WHEN:
3-4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14. The lobby doors will open at 2 p.m.; doors to the auditorium will open at 2:30 p.m. A reception in the lobby will follow the service.

 
 

WHERE:
UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall.

 
   
 

BACKGROUND:
The public is invited to this event. Seating is first come, first served. A full house is expected, so reporters should phone Media Relations ahead of time to reserve a seat in an area of the auditorium being set aside for them. Members of the media should enter Zellerbach before 3 p.m. through the Will Call booth to the left of Zellerbach's front entrance, at the southeast corner of the building.

Reporters will be seated in an area in the front left tier. It will provide a clear view for video and still cameras. There will be a section at the back of the auditorium for TV cameras. Member of the media may not roam through the aisles with cameras during the memorial service and must refrain from using lights and flash photography.

PARKING:
Off-campus parking options are posted at http://www.berkeley.edu/visitors/parking.html. There will be room for a few TV trucks to park near Zellerbach. News crews should call Media Relations ahead of time for more information.
