WHAT:
Where Will The Poor Live? Housing Policy and the Location of Low-Income Households," the 4th annual Conference on Housing and Urban Policy, to be held at the University of California, Berkeley.

Participants will explore the challenge of overcoming resistance to housing for the poor and integrating the poor into metropolitan neighborhoods by examining the Census 2000 results, housing voucher programs, development trends, land-use reforms and more.

Some 14.4 million American families, about one in seven, pay more than half their household income for housing or live in substandard conditions, according to the Center for Housing Policy in Washington, D.C.

7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7.

WHERE:
Arthur Andersen Auditorium at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. The business school is on Gayley Road, across from Memorial Stadium.

WHO:
Keynote speakers include:

Henry Cisneros, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and ex-mayor of San Antonio, Texas, talking about new directions for mixed-income housing development projects. He now is CEO of American CityVista, which is working to provide housing in urban centers.

Ron Gonzales, mayor of San Jose, Calif, will talk about local housing strategies. The median price of a home in Santa Clara County is $460,000.

BACKGROUND:
This event is sponsored by the Berkeley Program on Housing and Urban Policy at UC the Haas School of Business. The program is administered by the Institute of Business and Economic Research and is associated with its Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics. It draws institutional support from the Haas School, the College of Environmental Design and the Goldman School of Public Policy.
