WHAT:
The formal launch at the University of California, Berkeley, of one the state's first car-sharing programs on a university campus. Through a partnership between City CarShare and the campus's Parking & Transportation Department, UC Berkeley students and employees can pay to share vehicles.

This pay-per-use alternative is helpful to students living near the campus and a practical daytime vehicle option for employees who commute to campus via mass transit and other means.

If large numbers of students join the program, parking demands and traffic could be reduced on campus.

WHEN:
Noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5.

WHERE:
Sproul Plaza, UC Berkeley, near the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Bancroft Way.

BACKGROUND:
One of two new shiny green Volkswagen Beetles that comprise the initial City CarShare/UC Berkeley partnership will be on hand for inspection by members of the campus community, along with information about how to participate in the program.

Daryl Norcott, East Bay director of City CarShare, and Kira Stoll, transportation planner for the campus's Parking & Transportation Department, will answer questions, along with City CarShare staff and members.

As demand at UC Berkeley warrants, more CarShare vehicles, including hybrid cars, will be added.
