DETAILS
Hekmat Karzai, a cousin of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, was appointed first secretary to the Embassy of Afghanistan in May 2002, after installation of the new, democratic government in Kabul.
Born in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Hekmat Karzai fled the country with his family after the Soviet invasion. He settled in the Washington, D.C., area and earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in management at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Proficient in the languages of Pashto, Dari and Urdu, Karzai has served as a program officer to help college-trained Afghans return to help rebuild their native country. He also has worked to restore women's rights and basic human rights in Afghanistan.
