Channing-Bowditch housing project to begin soon
BERKELEY – Construction of the new Channing-Bowditch Student Housing project is slated to begin later this month, eventually adding apartment-style living for approximately 230 students on the southside of the campus.
The Channing-Bowditch project will further the University's continuing efforts to provide residences close to campus for a larger number of graduate and undergraduate students. The new facility will be built on Channing Way near the corner of Bowditch Street, next to the historic Shorb House. Occupancy of the new facility is planned for Fall 2005.
Each of the fifty-seven units in this wood-frame building will have its own kitchen and shared bedrooms and bathrooms. The facility includes two south-facing courtyards, covered bicycle parking, study lounges, and recreation and laundry rooms. The project does not include any parking or food service operations.
The buildings currently located on the Channing-Bowditch site have been vacated by staff from the campus offices of Parking and Transportation and Residential and Student Service Programs. Those buildings and the adjacent Epworth parking lot will be removed to make way for Channing-Bowditch Housing. Demolition of the existing structures is scheduled to start in mid-March.
Construction of Channing-Bowditch Student Housing will cause some disruption in the neighborhood. The sidewalk and parking lane in front of the construction site will be closed for the duration of construction. Two-way vehicle traffic on Channing Way between Bowditch Street and Telegraph Avenue will be maintained. The hours of construction will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends, in keeping with the City of Berkeley's noise ordinance. Construction will adhere to regulations concerning safety, dust, dirt, exhaust fumes and storm-water runoff.
