Memo to War Editors: Two war-related events to take place at UC Berkeley next week
BERKELEY – Two events - a nighttime vigil and a special faculty forum, "War in Iraq" - will be held at the University of California, Berkeley, next week as students return to campus following spring break. Both events were developed by a special advisory committee to Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl to foster ongoing campus dialogue on Iraq-related matters.
Nighttime vigil on Sproul Plaza
Monday, March 31, 8 p.m.
The campus community will gather on Sproul Plaza to quietly reflect on and converse about these difficult times. The vigil will begin and end with music from the Campanile's carillon. Scheduled speakers include Chancellor Berdahl; Jesse Gabriel, student body president; Claire Kramsch, professor of German; and former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass, a professor of English. Music will be performed by a solo trumpet, members of the Faculty Club Monks, and other groups. Representatives of various student religious groups will offer short prayers. There will be time for silent reflection and conversation/interaction. Light sticks, rather than candles, will be provided.
"War in Iraq," a faculty forum
Tuesday, April 1, 7:30 p.m., Zellerbach Auditorium
Several prestigious faculty members from UC Berkeley will participate in a forum about the war's impact on the Middle East, foreign policy, the economy, the peace movement, and more. The panelists will include Nezar Al Sayyad, professor of Middle Eastern Studies; Thomas G. Barnes, professor of law and history; David Caron, professor of law; Kiren Chaudhry, professor of political science; Laura Nader, professor of anthropology; Steven Weber, professor of political science; and Janet Yellen, professor of economics.
A brief presentation by each scholar will be followed by a panel discussion and a question-and-answer session. Admission is free, but tickets are required, and a block of them has been set aside for the general public. Tickets will be available at the Zellerbach Box Office on March 31 and April 1. Reporters with credentials do not need tickets and, the evening of the event, should check in at a media table set up outside the front doors. A special section of Zellerbach will be reserved for journalists.
