CDC Director gives talk on health preparedness at School of Public Health

WHAT
" Health Preparedness and Promotion: Beyond Orange Alert," a Dean's Colloquium by Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The talk, sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health, will end with a 15-minute Q & A session.

WHO
An infectious disease expert, Gerberding became the first woman to lead the CDC in July 2002. Prior to her appointment, she was a leader of the agency's bioterrorism-related efforts, including the response to the anthrax attacks in 2001.

Gerberding has strong ties to the Bay Area, having received her master's degree in public health from UC Berkeley in 1990. She also trained in internal medicine, infectious diseases and clinical pharmacology at San Francisco General Hospital and UC San Francisco. From 1990 to 1998, she served as director of the Epidemiology and Prevention Interventions Center at San Francisco General Hospital.

DETAILS
The Dean's Colloquium is a series of public lectures sponsored by the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and is held four times a year. Prior speakers include Ciro de Quadros, director of the Division of Vaccines and Immunizations in the Pan American Health Organization, and Nancy Adler, director of the Center for Health and Community at UC San Francisco.
