Campus voice mail system has been fixed

- A problem that hobbled the UC Berkeley campus voice mail system throughout much of today (April 10) has been fixed.

According to the Communication & Network Services unit, the problem at first was thought to lie with the interface between the SBC switch and the campus voice mail system.

The equipment that identifies the number being called and directs the call to the proper voice mail box was not working; instead, callers reached a default voice mail system message. Message indicator lights were not coming on and users could not retrieve messages without a work around.

Communication & Network Services worked with SBC to repair the problem. The switch's circuit was eliminated as the source of the problem, as was the protocol than runs across the circuit. Eventually the problem was fixed by resetting the switch at SBC's central office — thus proving every techie's first piece of advice: When in doubt, reboot.
