WHAT
"The New Nuclear Danger: George W. Bush's Military-Industrial Complex," a public lecture at the University of California, Berkeley, by Dr. Helen Caldicott, a renowned anti-nuclear and environmental activist, as well as a Nobel Prize nominee.

Her lecture topic is also the title of her latest book, published in 2002. In it, she says the Bush administration is indebted to the arms industry, that arms makers are exploiting U.S. fears of terrorism, and that the Pentagon is resisting reduction of this country's nuclear arsenal.

WHEN
7 p.m., Thursday, April 24.

WHERE
Chevron Auditorium at UC Berkeley's International House, 2299 Piedmont Ave. at Bancroft Way.

WHO
Caldicott left pediatric medicine in 1980 to work fulltime to prevent nuclear war, returning to medicine for a year in 1998 before leaving to focus on global preventive medicine.

While living in the United States, Caldicott founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization of doctors who educate their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear weapons, nuclear power and nuclear war. She is the founder and president of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute based in Washington, D.C.

DETAILS
The event is sponsored by the UC Berkeley Chancellor's Office, Goldman School of Public Policy and School of Public Health, and by the World Affairs Council of Northern California. It is free and open to the public.

Caldicott will be available for media interviews prior to her talk at International House. To make arrangements, contact Kathleen Maclay in UC Berkeley Media Relations at (510) 643-5651.
