Lee Hamilton

WHAT
Lee H. Hamilton, former chair of the Congressional Committee on Foreign Relations and current vice chair of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States, will be honored for a lifetime of contributions to international understanding by International House, a renowned non-profit residential and program center affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley.

Hamilton will be honored at "I-House's" 15th annual Celebration and Awards Dinner and will speak at the event.

WHEN
Wednesday evening, May 7. A reception begins at 6:30 p.m. and dinner is at 7:30 p.m. The program will begin during the dinner. Tickets are $250 each, and tables can be purchased. The event is open to the public.

International House, 2299 Piedmont Ave., at the top of Bancroft Way.

WHO
During Hamilton's 34-year tenure as a Congressional representative for Indiana, he was a leading voice on foreign affairs, making broad contributions to U.S. foreign policy, particularly with regard to the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. In 2001, Hamilton was named one of "71 People the President Should Listen To" by Washingtonian magazine. Hamilton currently is director of the Washington, D.C.,-based Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and holds a Presidential appointment to the U.S. Homeland Advisory Council.

DETAILS
The gala is expected to attract more than 250 attendees and raise more than $70,000 to support financial aid, renovations and programming at I-House. I-House is dedicated to fostering understanding and friendship among peoples of all nations, races and cultures. It currently houses 585 UC Berkeley students and scholars from 75 countries and 20 U.S. states. A documentary about I-House will be shown on KQED on Saturday, April 26, at 6 p.m.

I-House board members Glenn Isaacson and George Raad also will be honored at the gala, which, in addition to featuring remarks by Hamilton, will include musical and dance performances by I-House student residents from around the world.
