Leon Panetta, former White House chief of staff, to speak at Convocation

WHAT
University of California, Berkeley's 2003 Commencement Convocation, a gathering to honor all graduating seniors. Leon Panetta, former White House chief of staff and U.S. congressman, will deliver the keynote speech.

WHEN
4 p.m. Thursday, May 15. Convocation, which will include several speeches and the presentation of awards to outstanding graduates, is scheduled to conclude shortly before 6 p.m.

WHERE
The Greek Theatre, UC Berkeley. The amphitheater, which seats about 6,000 people, is on Gayley Road, near Memorial Stadium.

WHO
In addition to Panetta, who was invited to speak at the event by graduating seniors, others addressing the audience will include:

  • Ankur Luthra, who will be awarded this year's University Medal, given to UC Berkeley's top graduating senior. Luthra, 21, also recently was named a Rhodes Scholar.

  • Martha Olney, UC Berkeley adjunct professor of economics. Olney is the recipient of one of the three UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Awards for 2003.

  • Ron Ostrow, who is returning to campus after graduating 50 years ago. A former reporter for the Wall Street Journal and Washington, D.C., correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, Ostrow will reflect on his years at UC Berkeley and share the wisdom of his experiences.

DETAILS
This event is not open to the public - tickets have been given to graduating seniors and their families. Reporters are invited to cover convocation, and special seats have been set aside for them. The theater will open at 3 p.m., and credentialed media may enter through the north gate. Press packets will be available upon entry.

A limited number of parking spaces for credentialed media have been set aside in the Bowles Hall parking lot. Enter the lot off of Gayley Road, between the Greek Theatre and Maxwell Family Field.
