WHAT
New Student Convocation, an annual back-to-school event at the University of California, Berkeley, that welcomes all new undergraduates to the fall semester. More than 3,000 new freshmen, transfer and UC Extension students are expected to attend.
The ceremony is being held on the first day of Welcome Week, the week before classes begin and a time for students to move into housing, tour campus and attend orientation sessions. Instruction begins Monday, Aug. 25.
WHEN
4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18. The Cal Marching Band will play, marching through the glade, at 3:45 p.m. and again at the end of the ceremony. A free dinner on the lawn will follow from 5-6 p.m. for all new undergrads with a student identification card.
WHERE
Memorial Glade, north of University Library, UC Berkeley.
WHO
Convocation speakers will be Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl; Genaro Padilla, vice chancellor for undergraduate affairs; and Kris Cuaresma-Primm, president of UC Berkeley's Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC).
Each fall, the chancellor and other speakers take this rare opportunity to address the entire incoming class and to comment on students' responsibilities both to UC Berkeley and to themselves during the new school year.
