WHAT
California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley (D-San Francisco) will join student leaders in their voter registration drive on Sproul Plaza at the University of California, Berkeley, and then present a special guest lecture on the historic recall election.
In Professor Kerwin Klein's undergraduate "California History" class, Shelley will discuss the election, his role and the challenges before him as the state's chief election officer, and the importance of Californians registering and voting in the recall election.
This lecture is open to UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff, and a question-and-answer session will follow.

- At 3 p.m., Secretary Shelley will join UC Berkeley student leaders registering voters on Sproul Plaza.
- From 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Shelley will speak to the class in room 155 Dwinelle Hall, a large lecture room.
WHO
As California's 28th secretary of state, Kevin Shelley serves as the state's chief elections officer. Elected to the statewide office in November 2002, he is responsible for voter issues and special statewide elections. As a member of the state Assembly, Shelley authored Proposition 41, a measure that funded newer, more accurate voting systems for California counties. He has also expanded California's vote-by-mail program and strengthened protections on voter file privacy.
Shelley grew up and continues to live in San Francisco. He served as a San Francisco supervisor prior to his election to the state Assembly in 1996. He took office as California's secretary of state in January 2003.
