Berdahl, 66, was appointed the eighth chancellor of the Berkeley campus in March 1997, capping an academic career devoted to leadership in public universities, including four and a half years as president of the University of Texas at Austin.
During his tenure as chancellor he has overseen an unprecedented rebuilding and renovation of the campus, returned the library to national pre-eminence, enhanced undergraduate education, raised private giving to the highest level in the university's history, and helped launch the establishment of three major research centers.
Berdahl, a historian, plans to take a year's leave and return to the campus to teach and continue scholarly work.
