WHAT
The Cal Can Creation Competition, in which groups of University of California, Berkeley, students will construct campus landmarks such as the Campanile and Memorial Stadium using canned goods destined for the Alameda Food Bank.
Students are donating the canned food - and participating in the competition - as part of the first campus-wide homecoming celebration to be held at UC Berkeley since 1964. The top three construction projects will split a $500 prize.
WHEN
Construction starts at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 2). Judging by staff members from the California Alumni Association, will begin at noon.
WHERE
Lower Sproul Plaza, UC Berkeley.
WHO
UC Berkeley's 2003 homecoming celebration began Sept. 29 and runs through Oct. 5. The tradition of a campus-wide homecoming was begun at UC Berkeley as far back as 1923, but died out in the turbulent, highly political atmosphere of the mid-1960s.
The entire celebration, sponsored by UC Berkeley and the California Alumni Association, includes Homecoming & Parents Weekend, Oct. 3-5.
The more than 50 events being held during the week include a "candlelight" folklore tour of the campus using blue and gold light sticks and "Battle of the Brains," a Jeopardy-style contest pitting students against faculty.
