WHAT
A public memorial service at the University of California, Berkeley, for Brian Maxwell, the former UC Berkeley track star and coach who, along with his wife, founded the PowerBar company. He died last Friday at age 51 after suffering a heart attack near his home in Ross, Calif.
WHEN
Noon to 1 p.m., Friday, April 2.
WHERE
Basketball arena, Haas Pavilion, UC Berkeley.
DETAILS
This event to celebrate the life of Maxwell will include tributes in words, music and images. Both Brian and Jennifer Maxwell graduated from UC Berkeley and have been generous contributors to the campus, donating to the Haas Pavilion renovation project and the athletic department's Academic Study Center. Last summer, the campus's Kleeberger Field was renamed Maxwell Family Field after the Maxwells underwrote the full cost of replacing its artificial turf.
Paul Gray, UC Berkeley executive vice chancellor and provost, said that Maxwell was a visionary leader whose "advice and philanthropy were crucial elements in maintaining excellence on campus."
Maxwell's sudden death was a stunning loss for the entire UC Berkeley family, said Donald McQuade, vice chancellor for University Relations. "His legacy is everywhere evident at Cal," he said.
Reporters wishing to cover the memorial service may enter the arena beginning at 11 a.m. There will be a section set aside for credentialed media.
